In Austria, there is a general requirement for dogs to be kept on a lead and muzzled in public spaces. In practical terms, this means that if your dog is wearing a muzzle in open green spaces, the lead requirement does not apply. On public transport, muzzles and leads are compulsory. In residential areas, shopping centres and premises of any kind, dogs must always be kept on a lead. Dogs are completely prohibited on playgrounds.
Walking & Dog-Friendly Trails
The Alpendorf and its surroundings are a paradise for everyone exploring with a dog by their side.
To help you find the most beautiful routes together, we’ve put together our favourite dog-friendly walks and leisurely strolls for you. Whether a short morning round or a longer evening stroll — there’s something to suit every pace.
Hiking with your four-legged companion
The Alpendorf is situated in the heart of one of Austria’s most beautiful hiking regions. Trails set off directly from the hotel in every direction — through forests, across alpine meadows and along mountain streams. Whether a quick stroll in between or a full-on summit adventure: there’s something for every pace. And for dogs especially — as most paths around the Alpendorf are perfectly suited for four-legged companions.
Our reception team is happy to help with up-to-date tips on alpine walks, dog-friendly routes and the most scenic viewpoints in the region.
Excursions with your dog
The Liechtensteinklamm is one of the longest and deepest gorges in the Alps — and can be reached on foot from the Alpendorf in around 30 minutes. Roaring waterfalls, moss-covered rocks and the spectacular Helix spiral staircase make this a truly memorable outing. Dogs are welcome on a short lead — please note: there are around 440 steps, some with metal grating — no problem for sure-footed dogs. Our tip: set off early in the morning.
The gondola departs right on the hotel’s doorstep and takes you comfortably up to the Gernkogel alpine and hiking area at around 1,767 metres above sea level. At the top, wide alpine paths, magnificent views and cosy mountain huts await — perfect for a well-earned rest. Whether a short loop or an extended mountain hike — there’s something to suit every pace. And for dogs especially: plenty of space, fresh mountain air and hardly any crowds.
The nature trail starts right at the hotel’s front door and winds leisurely through the countryside surrounding the Alpendorf. Over 30 native tree species are introduced with informative boards — and for dogs, there’s plenty to discover, sniff and explore. Perfect for a peaceful morning or evening stroll, even in less favourable weather.
The OPEN Golf St. Johann is just a 5-minute drive from the hotel. Dogs are welcome to join you on the course, as long as they are kept on the lead — ideal for those who want to pick up a club without leaving their four-legged friend behind. For Alpina guests, a round at the OPEN Golf is even included free of charge.
With an impressive drop of 380 metres, the Krimml Waterfalls are the fifth highest waterfalls in the world. A trail created by the Austrian Alpine Club leads directly to this breathtaking natural spectacle. Dogs are welcome on a lead. The waterfalls are located in the Hohe Tauern National Park and can be reached from the Alpendorf by car in around 90 minutes — perfect for a day trip.
